The Abyssinian is one of the oldest known cat breeds, believed to have originated in ancient Egypt or Ethiopia. Slender, athletic, and covered in a distinctive ticked coat that shimmers in the light, Abyssinians are among the most active and curious domestic cats. They are endlessly interested in their environment and people, making them one of the most interactive and entertaining cats you can own.

Pros

  • Extraordinarily curious and playful — endlessly entertaining
  • Athletic and acrobatic — loves to climb and explore
  • Warm and interactive with their people
  • Distinctive ticked coat is genuinely beautiful
  • Intelligent and quick to learn tricks and solve puzzles

Cons

  • Very high activity level — not suited to calm or sedentary households
  • Doesn't thrive when left alone for long periods
  • Short attention span during formal training
  • Prone to hereditary diseases including progressive retinal atrophy — health testing essential
